Car Water Pumps
A car water pump is a key component in an engine's cooling system, driven by a centrifugal pump that is itself powered by a crankshaft belt. Without a properly functioning water pump, your car's engine will not be able to expel the excess heat created by the firing of the pistons and cylinders in the engine block, leading to overheating and potential engine failure. These components feature inlets (located near the center of the part, in most designs) which permit the coolant that's sent back from the radiator to hit its vanes, forcing the fluid into--and thereby cooling--the engine. Certain manufacturers design these components with impellers instead of inlets, which force the antifreeze or water and coolant mixture straight through and into the engine block. How to Tell If a Car Water Pump Needs ReplacementA visual inspection of the cooling system is the best and fastest way to determine if any parts need replacement. Look for: - play or looseness of the car water pump pulley
- tautness in all the parts; there should be no slack at all
- coolant leaks
- gasket leaks
Each auto manufacturer uses its own design, so the exact appearance and location of these components will vary from vehicle to vehicle. The vehicle owner's manual will provide specific details.
