Auto Window Repair

Window regulators are responsible for the physical raising and lowering of the glass in passenger door car windows. There are two major types of window regulators: electric and manual. Ostensibly, electric ones are used in power systems, and manual ones are found in systems powered with a crank mounted on the inside of the car door.

How Window Regulators Work

There are four major components to every quality window regulator, regardless of whether it's an electrical or manual piece. First, a bar is used to give the actual glass the leverage it needs to stay in place. Second, a series of links allows the regulator to turn incrementally to raise and lower the glass _at a controlled rate. Third, spur gears support the linkage system and, finally, a worm gear stabilizes the overall movement of the system when it's in use. In fact, the only key difference between an electric and a manual component is that, in the former, these components are automated and controlled at the touch of a button, whereas in the latter, they have to be enacted manually by the turning of a crank. Plus, electric window regulators tend to cost significantly more to replace than manual ones. Because of the constant use these components face, they are prone to breaking down over time and often need to be replaced as a car ages.
